MPD - safe, affordable & reliable
Located about two-thirds of the way from Madagascar to Antarctica, the Heard and McDonald Islands are some of the most remote places on earth and the only two active volcanoes in Australian territory. As a result, they are also uninhabited. They are believed to have been discovered in the early 1850’s by two Americans from whom they received their names – captains John Heard and William McDonald. They became an external Australian territory in 1947 after the UK transferred ownership. The archipelago has also been a World Heritage Site since 1997. It sees millions of macaroni penguins each year and more than 40,000 seals during breeding season. All travel to the islands – primarily for research – requires a permit from the Australian Antarctic Division. Furthermore, there are no known human-introduced species, so anyone stepping on the island must adhere to strict quarantine guidelines. Since the islands are uninhabited there is a lack of courier services to Heard Island and McDonald Island. However, the Australian government does allow for some fishing activity in the surrounding waters.

Together, the islands are approximately 372sqkm with 101.9km of coastline. Heard Island is circular and approximately 80% of it is covered in ice. Big Ben, which dominates the island, is one of Australia’s two active volcanoes. At 2,745m tall, Mawson Peak on Heard Island is Australia’s highest mountain. The McDonald Islands are small and rocky. In 1992, McDonald Island began erupting again after years of dormancy. Its most recent eruption was in 2005. When travelling to the islands, there is only offshore anchorage permitted. Traversing the islands and, consequently parcel delivery to Heard and McDonald Islands, is dangerous. While they are spectacular to see, conditions are always changing and make for unpredictable journeys.

Seals, penguins and seabirds all manage to call the volcanic islands home. However, due to the remote location of the islands and volcanic activity, they remain uninhabited by humans. As of right now, parcel courier to Heard Island and McDonald Islands is not possible. However, since there are scientists researching the islands and visitors embarking on infrequent private tours there may be a need for cheap courier to Heard Island and McDonald Islands in the future. My Parcel Delivery’s current range of couriers and parcel delivery services don’t have any services to Heard Island and McDonald Islands, but we’re always working to expand our offering, so contact us now for advice on sending your parcel.
