The tropical island of Guam is an unincorporated territory of the United States in the western Pacific Ocean. It is the largest and southernmost island in Micronesia. Guam doesn’t exactly paint the picture of a deserted island. While it does boast exceptional coral reefs, waterfalls and scenic landscapes, the island has a cosmopolitan feel with its unique mix of European, Asian and Polynesian cultures. The Chamorros, Guam's indigenous people, first inhabited the islands nearly 4,000 years ago. The island were then discovered by the Spanish in 1521 and colonised in 1668. The Spanish maintained control until 1898 when it was surrendered to the United States. After the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941, Guam was captured by the Japanese and occupied for two-and-a-half years. Currently, the island is one of five U.S. territories with an established government. Its economy is driven by U.S. national defence spending, which accounted for 40.4%GDP in 2014. Tourism also contributes greatly – about 13.3% of GDP in 2014 – and has helped increase the demand for cheap courier services to Guam. While most tourists are from Japan, more from around the world are venturing to Guam's shores.
