The cost to send a parcel to Canada from the UK ranges from £19.99 to £104.69, depending on how big or heavy your parcel is.
The cheapest courier service to Canada is the DPD Air service, at £19.99 to send a parcel up to 1kg in weight. To send a 5kg parcel to Canada with DPD Air, it will cost £39.40.
To send a 10kg parcel to Canada, prices start from £55.16 using the MPD international service, a 20kg parcel from the UK to Canada costs £82.79 and to send a 30kg parcel to Canada it costs £104.69 with Parcelforce.
What can you send to Canada?
To find out if your parcel is ok to send to Canada, the first thing to check is the general list of restricted and prohibited items that you can’t send by courier (in the UK or to Canada).
The Canada Post website has a full list of items which are prohibited from being sent by mail which includes many household items which could contain dangerous or flammable parts including:
- Cosmetics, make-up, perfumes and aftershaves
- Camping gear
- Cleaning products
You will need to complete a pro-forma invoice when you can a parcel to Canada, which is a form asking you to list all the items in your parcel. This form will be inspected by the customs agents in Canada to identify if your parcel can be accepted. What are the customs charges when sending a parcel to Canada?
The Canada Border Services Agency examine nearly all international parcels coming into the country, to check if they’re allowed into the country and to determine how much import tax, if any, needs to be paid.
There are three different types of tax which could apply when you send a parcel to Canada: Goods and Service Tax (also known as GST), Harmonized Sales Tax (also known as HST) and Provincial Sales Tax (also known as PST).
If the items in your parcel are worth $20 Canadian Dollars or less, or the item is a gift, worth less $60 Canadian Dollars or lower, then then no duty or taxes will apply to your parcel. Note, there are some items which are excluded from the $20 tax exemption, these include tobacco, books, magazine and alcohol.
The actual amount of GST, HST and PST charged for your parcel will vary, but as a general guide:
- Goods and Service Tax (GST) is charged at 5%
- Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) only applies to items being sent to these specific areas in Canada - New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario or Prince Edward Island.
- Provincial Sales Tax (PST) only applies to items being sent to British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec or Saskatchewan
